You can't have the right solution using the wrong technology. Whether or not a technology is "state of the art" doesn't necessarily mean that it is or isn't appropriate.
Employing the right technology means a feasible and cost-effective solution that is viable over the long-term.
Any system that is considered a significant expenditure should be subject to at least a small technology evaluation.
Sometimes this can be provided by the vendor as part of the vendor proposal process, and should then also be subject to independent review.
No matter who performs the evaluation, it will require a good understanding of what is expected from the system now, and what will also be expected of the system in the future.
Technology Expertise
At RBCS we have worked with practically every type of electronic security technology including:
- access control & alarm monitoring, including systems that use card and keypad access; biometrics including fingerprint, hand geometry, retinal scan, iris scan, voice ID, and so on;
- video surveillance including video-based motion detection and smoke/fire detection;
- covert surveillance systems;
- hand-held or vehicle wireless computers;
- ID badging systems including visitor management and package tracking;
- perimeter fence intrusion detection systems;
- high security revolving doors (including metal detection);
- high-rise elevator control;
- intercom and emergency communication systems, including computer-aided dispatch systems (that integrate multiple radio and telephone systems);
- special security control systems, such as prison and detention cell interlocking door controls (doors & gates won't open unless specific other doors & gates are closed) ;
- high-security checkpoint design (pedestrian and vehicle);
- integrating physical and data access with Human Resources systems, so that terminating a person in HR results in cancellation of all physical and data access privileges;
- security systems network infrastructure including SONET backbones;
Low-Technology and High-Technology
Sometimes it is best that solutions aren't 100% leading edge or high-technology. Often the most reliable components, and the most sound backup systems, are low-technology items. Sometimes low-technology enhancements are needed to get the most out of the high-technology systems you are using. For an example of this, see the Technology Blinders section (opens in new window) of Ray Bernard's first article in the "convergence of physical security and IT" series.
A good technology evaluation will cover all aspects of technology solutions—including low- and high-tech.
