Network Security For Networked Electronic Security Systems

Is there a written statement of the security system's network security objectives? If you don't have one, it's likely that your security system's network is insecure, and possibly "wide open."

Is the system's network security configuration fully documented? Has the documentation been verified? Not only must the network security configuration be checked at installation, it must also be checked regularly as well as each time any network maintenance is performed.

The network security configuration should be performed against a list of the threats and conditions from which the network is to be protected. These are defined in the security objectives.

With the security objectives in mind, a thorough hands-on analysis of the network security of your security systems should be performed, if one has not been done already.

This will help ensure that you actually do get the level of security that you require, and that the products that make up the system were designed to provide.
